Thoughtful Products Ltd was established on Good Friday 2005 in Bedford.
Stephen Wife ( community nurse ) & Mike Murphy ( medical agent ) travelled up from their Surrey base to meet with John Burnett ( innovator ). The meeting had been planned to discuss designs for a toilet aid that could be marketed to enable users to get back to natures intended posture for emptying their bowels – Squatting .
Background to Meeting
Over the years of looking after older adults in their homes, Stephen had noticed that constipation seemed to follow any change to his patients posture i.e. raised toilet seats that were put in situ by colleague Physiotherapists, post hip replacement operations. It was found that raising patients feet onto a foot stool once they were sitting on the toilet, returned them to the position they had used for the best part of their lives and consequently allowed them to perform a bowel evacuation without straining. Further historical research with talking to bowel surgeons & significant others lead to the understanding that we in the western world and those we had influenced, had become slaves to bowel disorders caused by straining, such as piles, haemorrhoids, prolapsed rectum and problems with constipation. We were later to affectionately call this collection the “ Thomas Crapper Syndrome” Nature’s intended position for all animals to POO is SQUATTING – our children naturally get into a squat posture to fill their nappies and we encourage this to continue whilst they are using a floor based potty. As soon as they transfer to the big white porcelain throne, un-natural behaviours commence, straining and constipation which sometimes stays with them for the rest of their lives. Over conversation’s with Yassir Al Aaraji ( community G.P. ) & friend, it was decided that there was possibly going to be an uphill struggle to inform the public that they had got pooing so wrong. The best way forward was to publish the research, make it easily available and have it authenticated by a notable expert. Welcome Yassir the 4th director and an ‘in the know person’ to find and negotiate with a notable expert.
Birth of Products
1/ LOO STOOL Booklet, titled ‘Advice About The Correct Posture For Pooing,’ is a light hearted read. With written foreword and editing by Mr John F Stebbing MS FRCS Consultant Surgeon and a trustee of G.U.T.S. ( Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening) Registered Charity No. 1026791. The Booklet will give you an in-depth understanding of the history of the western loo and its related ailments. This Booklet has been created to promote
2/ LOO STOOL a multi function toilet aid that can also be a step stool & a bath stool. When Stephens children were very young he made them a Tabard to fit on their Teddy, with laces zips poppers toggles etc to help them learn how to tie a bow do up a zip etc. This was so successful that neighbours and family also used it with their children. Made with many colours, it also taught them to recognise colours.
3/ TEDDIES TEACHING TABARD as we have designed it today also doubles as a protective garment for nursery school children. It is made from multi-coloured cottons for ease of the wash and we have decided to market this to help the modern generation to get to grips with this age old problem teaching toddlers how to dress.
4/ AEROWALKERS are slip on mules, these are the brainchild of our innovator John Burnett who was already discussing this product with Mike Murphy when we met to Develop the Loo Stool, Researched over a number of years to help feet and leg circulation with particular emphasis on the problems we encounter as we get older, and particularly to protect from DVT (deep vein thrombosis). The Aerowalkers allow you to gently exercise whilst sitting down with a reflex motion. This motion presses down on the foot pump vein which is located under your feet and pumps blood back up the leg, thus improving circulation , relieving the symptoms of many feet and leg problems.
5/ Mike Murphy’s son Mark noticed that in the hospitals that he visited in connection with his work the people taking blood samples were using rubber gloves tied round the arm to act as a tourniquet. When questioned as to why they were not using a manufactured tourniquet he was told it was to stop cross infection. The reason for the rubber gloves was that no disposable tourniquets were available at a reasonable price. We took this problem to John Burnett our innovator who of course came up with our very simple solution to the problem , EASILET.
